Japanese Taiko drum player
Born in Kyoto, Japan, Tsubasa began playing wadaiko at age 11 and studied western percussion and music theory at a high school of music, where she also played drums in a rock band. After a 14-year stint as a member of Kodo (1996-2010), Tsubasa shifted base to Antwerp, Belgium, where she now works on collaborative projects with artists from various genres. Her original music draws on Japanese rhythm and song, and is widely acclaimed in Japan and abroad. In Europe, Tsubasa has worked on several contemporary dance projects, most notably famed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Play and Rein, and the National Ballet of Amsterdam’s Labyrinth/Het and TeZukA. Tsubasa also collaborates with a wide range of musicians and groups.
